Exploring the Heart of Togo: A Journey to Château Viale with QEWFA’s “Travel with Us” Program

At Quality Education and Water for All (QEWFA), our mission extends beyond words—it’s about experiencing, understanding, and engaging with communities worldwide. Recently, our “Travel with Us” program led a group of travelers to Togo, where we visited the historic Château Viale, an experience that enriched us in ways we never anticipated.

A Glimpse into Château Viale’s History

Château Viale, perched on Mount Kloto near Kpalimé, is a significant landmark in Togo. Constructed between 1940 and 1944 by Raymond François Viale, a Frenchman of German descent, the château reflects a blend of European architectural styles amidst the African landscape. In 1975, it became a presidential residence, hosting notable figures such as Senegalese President Abdou Diouf and Ivorian President Félix Houphouët-Boigny. The château underwent renovations from 1979 to 1982 but has since faced challenges in maintenance.

Our Visit to Château Viale

Our group was captivated by the château’s architectural elegance and the panoramic views it offers. Local guides enriched our experience with stories of its past, providing insights into Togo’s cultural and political history. Beyond the château, we immersed ourselves in the local community, savoring traditional Togolese cuisine and participating in vibrant cultural activities.
